How We Cut Curly Hair: Dry vs. Wet Cutting & Our Hybrid Method

Curly hair with wet and dry cutting techniques

Let’s discuss a hot topic in curly hair care: Cutting Wet vs Cutting Dry

Curly hair with wet and dry cutting techniques

The Dry vs. Wet Cut TL;DR

  • Dry Cutting is done on dry unstyled or dry styled hair. It’s ideal for refining shape and honoring your curl’s natural pattern without disrupting its spring. Think of it as sculpting your curls where they live.
  • Wet Cutting is done on damp hair but with curly still no pulling on the curls. It’s used for creating volume with inside layers to targeted areas.

At DryLand, we use a custom approach on curly hair. Each curl is different and so the technique needs to adapt, but often we start cutting dry to map your curl’s overall shape and see where the weight of the hair falls. If we then switch to wet cutting, it’s usually to add volume with inside layering, then after styling and drying curls your stylists will make final edits with a few more snips. This fusion, informed by our training in multiple major curly methods (Ouidad, DevaCurl Curly Girl, Rezo, Curlisto, etc.), allows us to tailor the cut to your hair’s unique density, pattern, and goals.

If you’ve researched curly cuts, you’ve likely hit the great debate: Dry Cut or Wet Cut? At DryLand Salon, our answer is a resounding “Yes.”

We believe the most precise, beautiful cut for your curls comes from using both techniques strategically. It’s not about choosing a side; it’s about choosing what’s right for your hair’s architecture. Below, we break down the “why” behind our signature hybrid sequence and how our multi-method training informs every snip.

Why “Dry cut, Wet cut, Style, Dry cut Again”? (Our Hybrid Sequence)

If your cut involves a cutting after your consultation, followed by some cutting after your shampoo on wet hair, and then some additional cutting after you’ve been diffused, you’re experiencing our precision hybrid sculpting method. Here’s why we work in these stages:

The Dry Sculpt: We start by assessing your hair in its natural, dry state. This shows us your curl pattern, spring, and where the weight naturally falls when you style at home on your own. Dry cutting allows us to establish the overall shape and remove bulk where it creates drag, not curl. Think of it as knocking out the rough shape of a block of marble we’re sculpting. We may skip this step depending on the condition of your hair (curls flat from being in a bun too long), or if we think you only need some smaller tweaks after styling.

The Wet Cut: For some hair types, especially denser or more elongated curls or folks who want more volume or strategic volume, wet cutting is a necessary second step. Using inside layering techniques and curved cutting when the curl is looser because it’s wet, lifts up the curls from the inside.

The Style & Final Dry Edit: This is our secret weapon. After cleansing, conditioning, and applying stylers using our hydrating bowl technique, we style your curls into their ideal formation. Then, we look again. As curls clump and lift with product and air, we perform our final, meticulous dry cuts. This ensures every curl ends exactly where it should, with movement and bounce that’s built into the shape. We’re buffing the details of our final meticulous sculpture.

The Philosophy Behind the Technique: A Fusion of Mastery

You might ask, “Why not just stick to one well-known method?” Because curly hair is too diverse for a one-size-fits-all solution.

Our stylists are educated in the foundational principles of the industry’s leading studios: Ouidad’s weight-cutting mastery, DevaCurl’s dry-cutting innovation, Rezo’s volume-focused shaping, and the artistic texture work from Bumble & Bumble and Curlisto. This isn’t a collection of certificates; it’s a living library of techniques.

This multi-method training means your stylist can ask, “Does this head of hair need Ouidad’s ‘Carve and Slice’ to remove interior bulk, or would Rezo’s ‘V-Shaping’ create better volume at the crown?” They have the expertise to make that call for you.

Color That Considers the Curl

This holistic thinking extends to our color work. Curls take color differently. Their open cuticle can grab tone quickly, and the dimension within a spiral is everything. Our stylists don’t just paint on color; they consider how the pigment will layer inside your curl, ensuring depth, shine, and a result that looks dynamic from every angle, not just when it’s stretched flat.

The Final Result: A Cut That Functions

The goal of this detailed process isn’t just a great look on salon day. It’s a cut that grows out gracefully, dries beautifully at home, and gives you consistent, reliable shape. We’re building a foundation that makes your everyday styling easier, not more complicated.

What to Expect at Your Salon Appointment

So, you’ve booked your first appointment with us. First of all, welcome aboard! We’re so glad you’re here.

We know that walking into a new salon can feel like a leap of faith, especially when it’s about embracing the curls you might have spent a lifetime fighting, or feeling like you just don’t want to go gray after all!

Let us pull back the curtain and ease your mind. Here’s exactly what you can expect from your first visit with us—and what makes the DryLand experience a little different.

Leave the “Perfect Hair Day” Pressure at the Door. We want to make one thing incredibly clear: we don’t judge. Seriously. Come as you are. If your hair is in a three-day-old messy bun, that’s fine. If there’s a little box-dye line at your roots, we’ve seen it (and fixed it) all.

Our founder, Lynnae, has been a curly hair specialist for over 25 years with clients that have followed her for years, and she’s lived the curly life herself. She built this salon on the understanding that hair changes, you have good days and bad days, and need patience, not perfectionism. The only thing we ask? Try to be on time. That’s it. We’ll try really hard to be on time too. The rest, we’ll handle together.

Your Consultation is a Real Conversation About You. Your time in our chair doesn’t start with scissors. It starts with a conversation. Every service includes an in-depth consultation where we listen. We want to know your story: what you love, what you battle, and what you dream of for your hair.

We’ll ask questions you might not have considered:

  • “What’s your water like at home? Hard water can change everything.”
  • “How often do you actually wear your hair up?”
  • “What does your ideal week of haircare look like—realistically?”

This isn’t small talk. It’s diagnostic. And because our team is trained in a wide swath of techniques in cutting and coloring as well as major curly methods—from DevaCurl and Ouidad to R+Co, Bumble & Bumble, and Rezo—we’re not listening with a single, rigid philosophy in mind. We’re listening to understand which tools from our extensive toolkit will serve you best.

Here’s where things get a little interesting. The expert opinion: we believe your natural, healthy hair is your most beautiful asset. So, if you ask for something that might compromise that health—like over-bleaching or constant heat styling—we won’t just say “okay.” We’ll have an honest, expert conversation with you about it. We see ourselves as guides and guardians of your hair’s integrity. Our goal is always to enhance what you have, not fight against it.

From the moment you walk in, our mission is to make you feel seen, heard, and understood. This is a safe space for you and your hair. We combine decades of hands-on experience with relentless, top-tier education to ensure you get a result that’s not just beautiful in our chair, but wonderfully wearable in your real life.

Ready to start the conversation? We can’t wait to meet you—and your locks—exactly as you are.

Baltimore Humidity and Hair Hacking

Curly haired woman with frizz free hair
Curly haired woman with frizz free hair

We know, it’s hot out this Summer 2025 and we’re not sure how you’re staying cool, but we know how to make sure that your breezy blowout or bouncy curls can keep their look without the humidity giving you all the frizz!

First let’s understand where frizz comes from. Frizz happens when your hair panics. Dry or damaged hair is like a sponge; it sees moisture in the air and absorbs it, swelling up because it’s trying to repair itself and reclaim the lost moisture from the damaged spots.

There’s a solution: Since your hair wants its hydration back, give it a style that first seals in all the water from washing, and doesn’t overheat or unneccessarily strip any moisture away during the styling process. Fill that cuticle up then smooth it down, and you’ll be frizz-free. Some products are better suited to do this than others, but our experts can help you find the right ones for your hair and look.

The styling itself can be cool relief for you and your hair. Use the cool setting on your blowdryer! Cool down the cuticle of your hair so that the style you give it, is the style that your hair settles in and doesn’t have to shrink in on iteslf after being heated up.

The damaged ends of your hair are also letting frizz play havoc on your locks. Split ends act like a wick soaking up all the moisture in the air and pushing it up the shaft of your hair blasting it apart and creating more damage that could cause more frizz. A clean cut at the end of your hair creates a smooth surface that is harder for humidity to penetrate… Yes, we are recommending that you get a cut if you are having a hard time with frizz.

Good luck out the Chesapeake Humidity this summer!

Defending your Hair from Color Damage

Keeping you hair healthy while getting the look you want is our biggest priority at DryLand Salon, and sometimes that means talking you out of something you ask for from our stylists. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t make recommendations for ways to get you that look while doing no harm!

Our gorgeous client never colored her beautiful hair, but she wanted to try something fun with balayage anyway. A little bit of dimension goes a long way. Rather than use full harsh lighteners on her hair, our stylist offered to use color to make an extremely subtle and ultimately less damaging change to her virgin hair.

This look is a balayage done with an additive color rather than stripping the hair with lightener. Our stylist also did not pull the color all the way to the most fragile part of the hair, the ends, so the whole effect is a healthier, shinier, extremely-enviable look that the client LOVED!!
